As a method, the Concept Grouping Matrix is located in the area of idea combination and idea enrichment. It is particularly helpful when dealing with larger ideas and concept sets (highly recommended for drawing new potential from “old” ideas as well).
The Concept Grouping Matrix scores/evaluates relationships between existing ideas, unearthing previously undiscovered clusters and groups of ideas. In our complex world, it is very often the clusters of ideas that become successful innovations.
In a symmetric matrix, all available ideas are juxtaposed to themselves in two axes. In the resulting cells, one now evaluates the relationship/combination of the respective opposing ideas. High scores are awarded in the cells for great similarities and great combinations.
By sorting the rows and columns in different ways according to the highest scores, exciting groupings open up, which can be displayed in the matrix with frames.
