Boundary shifting involves moving problem boundaries to find solutions to problems in a broader or different field of knowledge or application.

In a first step, the essential criteria that must be fulfilled within a project (product) are identified. Existing solution approaches that occur within the perceived problem boundaries are evaluated for their feasibility and permanence and considered as further application scenarios.

Thus, alternative solutions are sought by pushing the established boundaries of application perception and incorporating other areas of knowledge into the analysis.
