The method around the donkey Buridan goes back to an ancient myth. This told of a donkey that could not decide between two bundles of hay in the middle of which it was standing and therefore ultimately starved to death.
The resulting question, also philosophical, when both alternatives seem to be
are the same, how we should choose a better alternative is thus the basis of the method. Already the donkey possessed the problem, if he would decide for a hay bundle, it would mean equally to have to do without the alternative. But how to decide which alternative to forgo and which choice is ultimately the right one?
If that doesn’t seem possible, then you might as well let a die decide. In the end, it is always the case that what you have chosen is less interesting than what you could have chosen. This is what makes the fundamental question of the Buridan donkey so difficult.
But what is the solution? This one is apparently easier than thought. Basically, the aim is to make the existing alternatives unattractive one after the other until ultimately only one alternative remains.
