Many of the methods described in this book only develop their full effect through appropriate debriefing. The moderator significantly controls and influences the gain of knowledge through the questions asked in the debriefing. Accordingly, not all questions are suitable for every simulation. These should be carefully chosen to match the intended learning objective.
Julian Kea and Chris Caswell have developed #TheDebriefingCube from their 2017 idea, adding immensely to the world of facilitators. This is a collection of questions for debriefing these formats in need of reflection, addressing a total of six major focus topics:
1) Goal: Explore the group’s first steps and understanding of the goal.
2) Process: Exploring the individual process steps.
3) Group dynamics: exploring observed behaviors.
4) Communication: exploring what is thought, heard and said.
5) Emotions: Exploring feelings and their effects
6) What now? Exploring findings
The questions included in the set can be supplemented with your own questions as you wish.
#TheDebriefingCube is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License and can be downloaded online for free as a cut-out card set. A high-quality printed version in a fine wooden box is produced in an integration workshop in Berlin and is available for purchase. The included dice, with each side representing one of these focus topics by a symbol, allows for gamification during debriefing as well. Meanwhile, there is also a free browser-based online version of #TheDebriefingCube, where virtual dice can be rolled.
