Gantt Simple

Tips and tricks for using classic Gantt charts in digital transformation projects.

Gantt charts are bar charts that visualize the processes in a project on the time line. They can be enriched with a variety of information, such as operational responsibilities, financial and capacity resources, or dependencies on predecessors and successors.

According to the waterfall method, work steps are mapped as bars between a start and end date and put into a chronological sequence. Exemplary, for the implementation of a website: First comes the design, then development and testing, followed by the go live.

Milestones serve as transition steps between the project phases, for example for releases or decision meetings. In project management, Gantt plans are one of the classic methods, after all, they have been in use since the early 20th century.

Why is the classic Gantt plan included here as a transformation method? Because it contains elements that are also extremely useful for use in transformation projects. By abstracting to these essential elements, the Gantt plan helps transformation teams to record structures, map dependencies or control the implementation of individual work packages.

And: You can often create it digitally from data that you already have available anyway. Particularly in the early project phase, when everything still seems very knotty, a Gantt plan provides orientation and brings calm to the team. He can also convince doubters and get people on board who are used to more classic projects and do not (yet) trust the transformation. With digital tools, e.g. Smartsheet, the Gantt plan can even be collaboratively edited and shared or made available as a link for management.
